Key West, at the end of Highway 1, is the southernmost point in the continental United States. The remoteness of the town has helped preserve its colonial appearance. It has also made it in the past a pirate hideout, and then a magnet for gay people, artists, and writers, the most famous of them being Hemingway. The nights in Key West are particularly festive. They begin with a gathering on Mallory square to cheer the sunset in a thick crowd. Key West is the gateway to
Dry Tortugas National Park.
