Mount St Helens is an active volcano, notorious for its 1980 eruption, the most destructive eruption in the history of the United States, killing 57 people. Mount St Helens National Volcanic Monument, established two years later, preserves the volcano so that the aftermath of the eruption can be scientifically studied, as well as experienced by visitors. Some of the most impressive sights include remnant of large forests whose trees were blown away by the eruption like match sticks.
