St. Augustine, founded in 1565 by the Spanish, has the distinction of being the oldest city and port in the United States. The Castillo de San Marcos, now a National Monument, built in 1672 stands as the oldest fort in the country. The historic district of St Augustine is a set of quaint streets that are delightful to stroll. Henry Flagler, who did much to develop Miami and a railroad to Key West, left his mark in St Augustine with the former Alcazar Hotel (now City hall and Lightner Museum) and the former Ponce de Leon Hotel (now Flagler College, with the world most oppulent dorm rooms).
