The White Mountains, part of the Appalachians, cover a quarter of the state of New Hampshire. The White Mountains are the most rugged range in New England. They include Mount Washington, the highest mountain in the North East US. Being almost entirely included in the White Mountain National Forest or in state parks, the White Mountains provide vast recreational opportunities. Some of the most interesting sights to visit in the White Mountains are in Franconia Notch State Park: the now collapsed Old Man of the Mountains (whose profile is still the symbol of the state of New Hampshire), the aerial tram to Cannon Mountain, and the narrow Flume Gorge, which can be explored thanks to a boardwalk trail.
