Shoshone Falls, the "Niagara of the West" is a waterfall of the Snake River. Shoshone Falls flows over a rim of 1,000 feet wide and during high water, the falls stretch the full width of the rim, but the flow is often reduced by a diversion for the Shoshone hydroelectric plant. At 212 feet high, Shoshone Falls is higher than Niagara Falls. Shoshone Falls has been a tourist attraction since the 19th century, when it was painted by Thomas Moran and photographed by Timothy H. O'Sullivan.
