Natchez, a small city deep in history and culture, named after an indian tribe, was settled in 1716 by the French. It was the starting point of the Natchez Trace overland route, as well as the first capital of the state of Mississippi. New techniques in cotton agriculture were pionneered there. They made the city the wealthiest in the nation in terms of numbers of millionaires per capita at the start of the Civil War. Natchez has more Antebellum mansions and estates than any other city, partly due to the fact that during the Civil War it was spared the destruction of many other Southern cities. The quiet streets of the Natchez historic district, where each house has a story, are delighful to explore on foot.
