Albuquerque is the largest city in New Mexico. Founded in 1706 as a Spanish colonial outpost, the city started as mere plaza surrounded by government buildings, homes, and a church. This plaza area has been preserved and is now a cultural area and center of commerce, referred to as "Old Town Albuquerque", "Old Town", or "La Placita" ("little plaza" in Spanish).
