Set in an isolated high-desert environment accessible only through unpaved roads, Chaco Canyon is the site of Chaco Culture National Historical Park, preserving the most outstanding concentration of ancient pueblos in the American Southwest. Between 850 and 1150, Chaco Canyon was home to a city of complex layout that was a major political, trading and ceremonial hub for the region. The best preserved complex in Chaco Canyon is Pueblo Bonito, a "Great House" four stories tall that incorporated 700 rooms and kivas of large size, built with well-crafted masonery. Chaco Culture National Historical Park, together with some smaller Chaco sites, is a
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
