The more than 250 slaughterhouses that gaves its name to the Meatpacking district have all but disappeared in less than 10 years. New construction in the district include the High Line, a stretch of abandonned elevated railroad transformed into parkland, and the IAC, the first Frank Gehry building in NYC. The Stonewall riots of 1969, started after a raid on the Stonewall Inn, are the start of the modern LGBT rights movement in the U.S., but it wasn't until 1992 that the Gay Liberation sculpture, completed in 1980 as the first piece of public art dedicated to LGBT rights, found acceptance.
