San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan is the capital of Puerto Rico, and the main city on the island. It has the distinction of being the oldest city under US flag, being funded in 1508. The historical district of the city, Old San Juan lies on a distinct small island, and is characterized by narrow cobblestone streets bordered by houses painted in bright color in the Carribean style. San Juan, being subjected from frequent seaborne attacks, built a number of forts. The oldest, Fort Felipe del Morro was constructed in the 16th century, and continually ugraded in the subsequent 400 years. El Morro is part of San Juan Historical National Site, as well as a a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
