Columbia is the capital of South Carolina. It is a midland city with a relaxed small town atmosphere. Although Columbia was burned to the ground in 1865 by General Shermann, Union troops missed the First Baptist Church where the Ordinances of Secession were drawn to announce the formation of the Confederacy. Other Columbia historical buildings include the boyhood home of president Woodrow Wilson and the home of Robert Mills (the first federal architect).
