Minuteman Missile National Historic Site preserves the last remaining Minuteman II nuclear missile system in the United States. There used to be 150 Minuteman II missiles spread over South Dakota, until there were deactivated following the signing of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) by President George Bush and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in 1991. Despite its fearsome secrets, enclosed by a single wire fence, the Minuteman missile silo site is smaller than a football field, and situated less than a mile from Interstate 90.
