Despite its small size of about 4km in circumference, Enoshima Island offers multi-faceted attractions. The island has been popular since the Edo period (1603-1868) as a scenic spot and a pilgrimage site. Its Enoshima Shrine, which historically started within the Enoshima Iwaya caves, is composed of multiple structures (Hetsunomiya, Nakatsunomiya, and Okutsunomiya) linked by stairs, walkways, and more recently, illuminated escalators. At the island's entrance, local food specialties such as tako senbei octopus crackers are offered on bustling Nakamise Street, while its top is capped by the serene Samuel Cocking garden which contains a variety of flowers, tropical trees and modern sculptures, as well as a lighthouse known as the Sea Candle that doubles as an observation platform.
