Bagan is possibly the most impressive sight in South-East Asia, and one of the man-made wonders of the world. In two and half centuries of extraordinary religious fervor, between 1057 and 1287, thousands of Buddhist monuments and temples (as many as all European cathedrals) were built in the relatively small valley of the Ayeyarwaddy river. They range from soaring temples to small stupas, active temples to ruined buildings. Each of them has a different style and size, some have gilded domes, mural paintings, intricate carvings, and steep staircases leading to expansive views. Between the temples, rural life continues in the villages as it had for centuries. A hot air balloon ride over Bagan allows you to take in the vastness of the site. In 2019, Bagan was at least recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
