Yangon, the largest city in Myanmar, has not been touched by the modernization of other South East Asian capitals. The highlight to any Yangon visit is the Shwedagon Paya (the Golden Dagon) possibly the oldest, most sacred, and most beautiful Buddhist pagoda in the world. It is a complex construction of ample proportions which comprises more than a hundred different zedis, temples, shrines, and pavilions, all topped by a 100m dome covered with more than 50 tonnes of gold. Besides, Yangon is a fascinating city to explore, full of pagodas and old colonial buildings. The vegetation and lakes - notably Kandawgyi Lake - contrast with lively streets and sprawling markets. On the waterfront, people still cross the wide river by oared bots while workers unload heavy bags on rice on their backs.
