Now a sleepy city, Lukang (Lugang) used to be an important trading port with mainland China. Lukang's economic decline averted the modernization that demolished historical buildings elsewhere, leaving old buildings preserved. They include over 200 temples, of which the most magnificent is the Longshan temple, a showcase of traditional design and woodcarving. Those, and a network of twisting narrow alleys full of historic houses, some of which are lit by red paper lanterns at night, make it one of the best places to see old Taiwan.
