Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, is a clean and sophisticated metropolis with a variety of attractions. The three main memorials (Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Martyr's shrine) sport honnor guards who change hourly in a meticulously choregraphed ceremony. An alternative version of history is available at the 2-28 Peace Park. Notable temples in Taipei include the Taipei Confucius Temple, and the multistory Guandu Temple, one of Taiwan's oldest (1661). Taipei is known for its food and many night markets, the most famous of which is the Shilin Night Market. More recent entertainment and shopping options are available in the Xinyi district, topped by Taipei 101, which was the tallest building in the world from 2004 to 2010 (508 m). Not too far away, trails climb forested hills for panoramic views.
