Uppland, North of Stockholm, was the cradle of Sweden, and Uppsala was the holiest place in pre-Christian Scandinavia, as attested by the burial mountains and Viking rune stones. It became the site of the first stone church built in the 12th century, a time when the first archibishop sat there. Today it is a lively university town.
