The Negev is the vast desert region of southern Israel that covers almost half of Israel's land. Its most interesting features are three huge craters (machteshim) of which the biggest, Machtesh Ramon, is the largest natural crater on earth. There are also interesting cultural sites, such as Avdat, that feature well-preserved Nabatean, Roman, and Byzantine ruins situated on a hilltop. This complex is part of
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
