A short distance from Victoria, on the
Vancouver Island, fittingly close to a city known for its flower decorations, the Butchard Gardens were started by Mrs Butchard to embellish the remains of a quarry exhausted by her husband's cement business. Through the skillful selection of species and landscaping, it has grown into one of the largest (55 acres), most beautiful, and varied private gardens in North America, including the Sunken Garden that started it all, a Rose Garden, Japanese Garden, and Italian Garden.
