Tlaquepaque is a neat small town (now a suburb of Guadalajara), whose residents have long been artisans and craftspeople, specializing in ceramics and glassware. They have opened a number of upscale art galleries that are interesting to browse. A couple of recent bed and breakfasts make it possible for travellers to stay outside of the big city of Guadalajara, although one should not necessary expect a restful night, with the local mariachi playing very loud.
Tonala, a bit further from Guadalajara, is a poorer town whose factories actually produce many of the crafts sold in Tlaquepaque. On Sundays, a large part of the town becomes a large arts and craft street market.
