Ambler and Kiana are two Inupiaq Eskimo villages along the Kobuk River, in Arctic North West Alaska, accessible only by air (commuter flight from Kotzebue) or by a ride along the river. Of the two, Ambler, the most remote (because furthest from Kotzebue) is the least developped. You can still see the villagers drying fish under tarps on the rocky beach in preparation for the long Alaska winter. I have found the locals in both villages to be exceptionally friendly and helpful. The Kobuk River between Ambler and Kiana flows through
Kobuk Valley National Park.
