Scotts Bluff rises over 830 feet (330 m) above the plains at its highest point, where the Great Plains start giving way to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Wagon trains of emigrants on the Oregon, California and Mormon Trails used the Scotts Bluff as a major landmark for navigation as well as a significant milestone.
