The Statue of Liberty, gifted to the United States from France in 1886, is an iconic symbol of the United States. The Statue of Liberty is located in Upper New York Bay on Liberty Island. Nearby Ellis Island was the gateway for millions of immigrants to the United States from 1892 to 1954. The main building used to process immigrants on Ellis Island has been turned into a museum of immigration. Both islands, as well as the Statue of Liberty form the Statue of Liberty National Monument. The Statue of Liberty itself is a
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
