San Juan is the capital of Puerto Rico, and the main city on the island. It has the distinction of being the oldest city under US flag, being funded in 1508. The historical district of the city, Old San Juan lies on a distinct small island, and is characterized by narrow cobblestone streets bordered by houses painted in bright color in the Carribean style. San Juan, being subjected from frequent seaborne attacks, built a number of forts.
