Providence is the capital of Rhode Island. Founded in 1636, Providence was one of the first cities established in the US. After being one of the first cities to industrialize, earning the nickname "Beehive of Industry", it has deserved a new moniker of "Renaissance City" by undergoing a shift to service industries. It is today a pleasant and compact small city, home to seven institutions of higher learning, among which the Ivy-league Brown University.
