The Black Hills of South Dakota are a small mountain range encompassing the Black Hills National Forest forming the tallest peaks of continental North America east of the Rockies. The Black Hills have been so-called by native Lakota because of their dark appearance from a distance, as they are covered in dark trees. The Black Hills are a popular tourist destination, including
Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Custer State Park,
Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, the Crazy Horse Memorial, amongst others. Gateways of the Black Hills are Sturgis in the North (famous for the motorcyle rally) and Hot Springs in the south (home to the world's largest mammoth research facility).
