Northern California has a relatively low population density, with no major urban centers. The coastal part has a moister climate than the rest of the state, which supports dense temperate forests. Among them are the redwood trees, some of which grow to be the tallest trees on earth. The Northern coast is even more rugged than the central coast, so much that a long stretch of it, called the Lost Coast, is not deserved by a highway. The interior forms the southern end of the Cascade Range, a chain of dormant volcanoes that include Mt Shasta and Mt Lassen.
