Arles is a city in Provence, known for its may Roman and Romanesque monuments, and the work of Van Gogh. Arles Roman monuments include: the Roman Theater (mostly ruined, as it was used as a source of construction materials), the Arena (sitting 12,000, still in use for bullfights) the Thermae of Constantine, and the Alyscamps, one of the most famous necropolises of the ancient world, which well over a milenium after its creation by the Romans, still attracted bodies from all over Europe. Arles's Church of St. Trophime (Saint Trophimus) is a major work of Romanesque architecture, noted for the representation of the Last Judgment on its portal and the columns in the adjacent cloister.
