Considered by Goethe to be one of the most beautiful towns in Germany, Wurzburg has many churches in its own town, as well an imposing citadel. Its most remarkable monument is the Residenz, one of the largest and most beautiful baroque palaces in Germany, surrounded by wonderful gardens. Created under the patronage of the prince-bishops Lothar Franz and Friedrich Carl von Schonborn, it was built and decorated in the 18th century by an international team of architects, painters (including Tiepolo), sculptors and stucco-workers, led by Balthasar Neumann. Wurzburg is 275km north-west of Munich, in Bavaria. The Wurzburg Residence, with the Court Gardens and Residence Square, is a
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
