Founded a millennium ago, when the first stone of the White Tower was laid by William the Conquerer in 1078, and expanded upon over the centuries since, the Tower of London has been the seat of British government and the residence of kings, the site of political intrigue, and the repository of the Crown Jewels. It has been an armory, a prison for members of court, lords and ministers, clergymen and knights, and the site of many executions and assassinations. A complex, and imposing fortress, it is the window to a violent and complex history. The Tower of London is a
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
