Bath is a city noted for the Roman baths and homogeneous grand Georgian architecture. The Romans built a large bath complex over one of Bath natural hot springs. Its remains forms the largest Roman-period site in Northern Europe. The present Bath Abbey, built during the 15th century, was the last medieval church built in England, replacing a church were Edgar, the first king of unified England, was crowned. In the 18th century, when Bath became the center of fashionable society, a number of elegant semi-circular terraces were built. The use of the same cream-colored Bath stone in all the buildings of that period gives the town a remarkable architectural unity. The historic center of Bath is a
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
