Hanalei is a pleasant and relaxed village. Although the largest on the North Shore, it has preserved its character, surrounded by a pastoral setting of taro fields that produce two-third of Hawaii's poi taro. The Hanalei valley, besides its taro paddies also doubles as a wildlife refuge where many birds, including the endangered nene, can be found.
