The area around the tiny hamlet of Big Sur is the most dramatic and wild on the central coast. Between 10 miles south of Carmel and 30 miles north San Simeon, for about 50 miles, the Santa Lucia range plunges directly into the Pacific. Waves pound big boulders offshore. Clinging precipitously to the side of big cliffs and steep slopes is a section Highway 1 that many consider to be the most scenic coastal drive in North America.
