The Tehachapi Mountains separate Northern California and the Central Valley from Southern California and Los Angeles. The steep Gorman Hills, just off Interstate 5, not far from Antelope Valley, can have in good years some of the densest and most diverse wildflower displays in California. Usually the bloom appears later than in Antelope Valley, due to the difference in elevation. The main historical site in the area is Fort Tejon State Historic Park, a former United States Army outpost. The Pyramid Lake reservoir is the deepest lake in the California Water Project system.
