San Gabriel Mountains National Monument is recent, however the San Gabriel Mountains are long-established recreation grounds for the second largest metropolitan area in the United States. Despite its proximity to the city, the area is a large 541 square miles, and the topography quite dramatic, with Mount Baldy rising above 10,000 feet above deep and wild canyons. Besides providing an expansive view of the Los Angeles Basin, Mount Wilson Observatory is known as a place where Edwin Hubble and Albert Einstein conducted research.
