La Jolla is an upscale community (highest US average home sale price in 2009) settled atop cliffs that drop to sandy secluded coves and clear blue waters. The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is located in La Jolla, as is the Salk Institute, an independent biological and medical research center founded by Jonas Salk who developed the first polio vaccine. The stark building, designed by Louis Kahn, as "architecture of silence and light" is considered to be a masterpiece of modern architecture.
