Old town San Diego was the first official Spanish settlement in California, where the city grew from the beginning of the 19th century, until the fire of 1872, after which it moved to downtown's present location. In 1968, the area became Old Town Historic State Park, and historic structures were restored or rebuilt. Today, Old Town San Diego is a pedestrian district with restaurants and shops that are inspired either by Mexico or history.
