As the tallest cathedral in France, Notre-Dame of Amiens, built in the 13th century, represents the pinnacle of Gothic engineering. Recent research has revealed that, although they now appear as bare stone, like all medieval sculptures, the fine display of sculptures on the principal facade was originally painted polychrome.
