Paestum was a colony founded by the Greeks in the 6th century BC as Poseidonia, the city of Poseidon, that was taken and renamed by the Romans in 273 BC. Nowadays, the three Greek temples of its the archelogical site are some of the best preserved monuments of the Ancient Greek world. The coastal town of Agripoli make a good base for exploring Paestum, with its pleasant setting, friendly youth hostel, and clean sandy beaches. The archelogical site of Paestum is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site consisting of three areas around Agripoli.
