Zion is a land of deeply cut and narrow canyons, the steepest on the Colorado Plateau. The beauty of most of them cannot be seen from the trails. Exploring these wonders hidden in the bowels of the earth combines hiking, climbing techniques, and swimming into the sport of canyoneering. Technical canyons require the use of ropes and harnesses. Even when the temperatures in the desert soar in the 100Fs, the water in the subterranean canyons remains cold enough that without protection such as wetsuits, it is very easy to get hypothermic.
