Shanghai is the most populous city in the world (population 26 million). For tourists, Shanghai has a clear focal point, called the Bund, a roughly mile-long promenade along the west side of the Huangpu River, where you can glance China's past on one side and China's future on the other. Shanghai's past has been preserved as row of magnificent European-style historic buildings that housed foreign banks and hotels, and as traditional shops in areas such as Fangbang Middle Road, although most of the older homes are being slated for demolition. Shanghai's future is represented by the futuristic Lujiazui skyline, which symbolizes the status of Shanghai as the showpiece of China's economic success.
