Black Rock Desert is the largest dry lake bed in North America, extending for 100 miles, with an area of 1,000 square miles. The near-perfect flatness of the surface made it the site of recent world land speed records, including a run of the first and only supersonic car. Black Rock Desert is also famous as the site of the annual Burning Man festival, a radical experiment in community, self-expression, and self-reliance, during which a temporary city of tens of thousands is established for a week on the Black Rock desert playa around a wooden effigy that is ritually burned at the end of the festival. Black Rock Desert lies 90 miles north of Reno.
