Fort Ord National Monument (established 2012) is the site of Ford Ord, a former military training ground for two million soldiers. The lands encompass one of the few remaining expanses of large, contiguous open space in the Monterey Bay area, with rolling hills and coastal chaparral. Many of the rare plants in the former Fort Ord military base have 50-90% of their worldwide habitat here.
