Jackson is a city located in the Western Sierra Nevada foothills. Jackson was founded in 1848 around a spring that made it a watering hole for cattle, then grew significantly during the California Gold Rush. Jackson's Kennedy mine was once the deepest gold mine in North America (5912 ft). The Argonaut mine was also the site of the worst gold mine accident in US history, when 47 miners died in a fire.
