The San Diego waterfront is a pleasant place to stroll. There are a few interesting historic ships that have been transformed into museums. Sailboats in the San Diego maritime museum include the Star of India, an iron-hulled square rigger with 100 feet tall masts that still sails, making her the oldest active ship in the world, and the HMS Surprise, a replica of a Royal 18th-century frigate made famous by the movie "Master and Commander". The most recent arrival is the giant aircraft carrier USS Midway, which when launched in 1945 was the largest ship in the world, and didn't retire until after serving in the first Gulf War.
