Venice is Southern California's counter-culture hub. Venice has a lot of galleries and studios, however, most visitors are drawn to the famous Ocean Front Walk, a colorful mile and half strip along the beach that sometimes feels like a human zoo. The city's name is due to its creation, at the beginning of the 20th century by eccentric Abbot Kinney, as a theme park complete with imported gondoliers. In the 1990s, three miles of the original canals were restored, resulting in one of LA's most pleasant residential area.
