The Puna district of the island of Hawaii, wich occupies its South-East corner, is characterized by recent volcanism. Lava Tree State park preserves nice specimen of free-standing lava tubes, formed when fast flowing lava encounters wet ohia trees. Hot springs heat pools. The rugged and isolated lava coast of Puna levels down at Kopoholo to form the best tidepools on the island. The only boat ramp on the Puna coast is found at Isacc Hale Beach Park, a popular, although tricky, surfing spot. The main town in Puna, Pahoa has the reputation of being an outlaw town.
