Waipio Valley is a mythical and sacred valley which was the residence of early Hawaiian kings and a population of around 10,000. The Eden-like environment is nowadays a isolated rural area without electricity or running water, settled by less than 50 taro farmers. The Waipio Valley flat floor is surrounded by 2000 ft steep cliffs. The Waipio Valley access road is the steepest of its length in the US, descending 1000 feet in less than a mile, a 25% grade. A true four-wheel drive vehicle (not AWD) is necessary to drive it safely.
