Fort Bragg, California

The city of Fort Bragg (pop. around 7,000), along the California North Coast, has become a tourist destination because of its views of the Pacific Ocean. However, the main reason to visit Fort Bragg is Sea Glass Beach, which was one of the prime areas around the world for collecting sea glass. Some of the surreal coves are still completely covered by small, smooth, pieces of sea glass. Glass Beach is now part of MacKerricher State Park, where the sea glass is protected. This is ironic, since this began in the early 20th century, when Fort Bragg residents threw their garbage over cliffs, including glass, appliances, and even vehicles. Over the decades, pounding waves wore down the discarded glass into the sea glass coating the beaches today.
